Gregorian Bridge

Address Via Ponte Gregoriano, 00019 Tivoli RM

The scenic Gregorian Bridge connects the historic city centre to Villa Gregoriana. Pope Gregory XVI built it to 1834. The structure is made of travertine, has single arch resting on two pillars side. Its history is linked to two events: the first negative dates back to May 27, 1944, the day it was blown up by retreating German troops, the second is its inauguration that took place on the first Sunday of May after that dramatic destruction, with the triumphal passage of the procession carrying the image of Our Lady of Quintiliolo to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo.

Even today this fascinating religious revival call to Christians and tourists attending the silent procession and the famous ritual of the blessing of the waters of the river Aniene that takes place right on the Gregorian Bridge.
By the bridge you can see over the beautiful waterfalls of the Villa Gregoriana, and even the ancient acropolis of Tivoli with the Temple of Vesta and the Temple of the Sibyl.
