Anio Vetus and Marcia Aqueducts

The Anio Vetus Aqueduct was the second aqueduct of Rome built between 272 and 269 B.C. by Marcius Curius Dentatus and Fulvius Flaccus.

The water came from the Aniene River, near Vicovaro, through an artificial lake that enabled decantation of the water. The aqueduct had a flow rate of about 180,000 cubic metres per day, following a hard course of 64 kilometers. A section of the Anio Vetus is also preserved with an arch of the Marcia Aqueduct. The Vetus crossed the ravine just upstream of the Marcia, and immediately made a right-angle turn towards Tivoli, parallel to the roadway. The surviving section is preserved intact where it passed under the arch of the Marcia, level with the modern road.
