Portale del Colle is encountered on Via del Colle, traveling along the only road that once allowed entry to Tivoli (ancient Via Tiburtina).
Dating from the 12th century, it is in perfect alignment with the substructive wall of the garden of Villa d’Este which preserves portions of the medieval walls that encircled the city (so-called Federician walls).
It is surmounted by Ghibelline battlements, and the municipal coat of arms can be seen on the interior facade.
