The Sepulchre Bridge is visible from Via Roma, opposite the entrance to Villa Gregoriana and inside the gardens of Largo Massimo.
This is a Roman bridge of which a fornix remains with an attachment to the right bank of the Aniene. It connected the center of Tivoli with the Via Valeria that climbed into the Acropolis area after crossing the large masonry bridge over the Aniene Falls (no longer visible today).
From the Bridge of Sepulchres, via a ramp, one descended into the vast necropolis of the late Republican and Imperial periods, discovered in 1832 during work on the Gregorian Cunucoli, in which was included the famous Tomb of the Vestal Cossinia.
Today the bridge retains only one archway in opera incerta while in ancient times it had mighty arches made of interconnected travertine ashlars. Before World War II there was a road under this bridge that led directly to Villa Gregoriana where the remains of Manlio Vopisco’s villa are located and for this reason it was also called “Vopisco Bridge.”
