L’edificio, orientato astronomicamente, è a croce greca con perimetro esterno quadrangolare e ingresso probabilmente rivolto verso la strada. Sui lati erano presenti nicchie sormontate da archi a tutto sesto.
The plan of the cell has been altered by modern restorations which have mainly affected the Northern wall and the lateral piers. Of the original structure of the tomb, only the massive corner pillars and half of the barrel vault remain, the extrados of which, not clamped to the roof, was built during a later construction phase.
The interior was in “opus reticulatum” while the floor had to be buried for approx. m 2.50, a measurement corresponding to the difference in altitude between the current floor and the ancient Tiburtina paving, discovered inside the Terme Acque Albule factory.
The tomb was mistakenly attributed by local scholars to Marcus Plautius Lucan, based on a false inscription that reported Pirro Ligorio in the 16th century; according to F.A. Sebastiani (in “Viaggio a Tivoli, antichissima città latino-sabina” in 1828), it could instead owned to the Cossinii family, mentioned in another inscription found near the tomb, of which no trace remains.
